Digital prints, exhibition in the Ci-Bank Gallery
“The exhibition is inspired by the eponymous theatrical performance (“Sex: Female”), presented by Ani Collier in 2004, with its motto – “You are not born a woman, you become one.” During rehearsals, Lilyana Dvoryanova takes hundreds of photos, aiming to capture both the movement of the body and the process of constructing the various characters in preparation for the performance. Later, after gathering all the material, the artist shapes the idea for an exhibition, which through the expressive means of photography aims to present femininity in its roles and attempts at self-reflection. Thus, the rehearsal photos are supplemented by photoshoots that “consciously seek and capture female existence in its ‘bodily density’ (‘Geographies’), ‘biographical roles’ (‘Biographies’), and ‘creative self-unfolding’ (‘Choreographies’). Based on these photographs, Lilyana Dvoryanova creates a book.
The photographs (digitally processed) are divided into three cycles, following the creative pursuits of the author: “Geographies,” “Biographies,” and “Choreographies.”
