Exhibition of digital graphics by LILIANA DVORYANOVA
Liliana Dvoryanova’s tenth solo exhibition “Appropriated Views” includes over 25 digital graphics printed on etched cardboard. In them, Liliana Dvoryanova uses as a starting point Renaissance and classical portraits, from which she “appropriates” the eyes and their looks and builds completely new images and stories. In her works, she explores how looks from the past see into our time, what stories they give rise to, whether they resist digital transformation, illuminating with light from the past the new visual environment in which they are placed…
The eyes are a gateway to the soul, people used to believe that. From the Fayum portraits to modern art, the eye is an expression, an expressiveness, a depth beyond which an infinity seems to see, something personal, behind which something “impersonal” looks at us. A look from the outside, but also from the inside. In our gaze we catch the Other as in a net. In modern art, eyes are different. Sometimes cut, mostly flat, not “revealing” but “barrier”. Are we that different? In “Appropriated Glances” I wanted to appropriate the deep gaze of Renaissance and classical paintings, to place it in the framework of modern aesthetics, as if to check – which will prevail? Where is the “center”? Will the “deep look” swallow the time of our relevance? Do we watch or are we watched?
