The art book Islands is an exceptional example of the symbiosis between visual art and the written word, creating a unique artistic experience. Described as a space where two distinct forms of expression merge – the language of images and the language of words – the book reveals a world of deep meaning that provokes both the mind and the heart.
The graphics in Islands are minimalist, yet rich in detail and emotional states, creating a meditative atmosphere. They are not simply a backdrop to the text but act as equal partners in storytelling. As Prof. Georgi Fotev notes, there is no dominance of one language over the other here – neither do the images illustrate the text, nor does the text interpret the images. They intertwine in a way that reflects the multi-layered nature of human existence and its relationship with the universe, Creation, and the Creator.
This conceptual depth and aesthetic harmony between text, typography, and imagery deservedly earned Islands the prestigious “Golden Lion” award for Best Publishing Project of 2023. The book has been recognized as original within the Bulgarian art of bookmaking, not only for its visual impact but also for the conceptual and emotional connection between its various artistic elements.
Islands is a journey through ideas and sensations, inviting the reader/viewer to contemplation and empathy, to finding comfort and meaning in the present moment, in the “here and now.”
